Upcoming Event: 29th Annual Academic Awards

For the last twenty eight years, the Association of Vietnamese Americans (AVA), formerly known as the Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA), has organized an annual Academic Awards Ceremony to recognize outstanding Vietnamese American students attending Maryland public schools for their excellence in academic performance, leadership skills and community involvement.  Last year, AVA recognized over 90 students who were nominated by their Montgomery County public schools.

In addition to the student academic awards, we will give out two $1,000 college scholarships and will also recognize teachers and counselors for their contributions to Vietnamese American students’ academic success, and for helping to enrich the students’ lives.

This year, the awards ceremony will take place at: Bohrer Park at 506 South Frederick Ave., Gaithersburg, MD 20877 on Sunday, June 04, 2017 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, followed by a community picnic which students, parents, and other Vietnamese community members are invited to attend.

Welcome To AVA

The Association of Vietnamese Americans (AVA) is the oldest Vietnamese American community based organization in Maryland.  AVA has helped refugees and immigrants of all backgrounds secure housing, find jobs, study for U.S citizenship tests, and hosted U.S. Naturalization Ceremonies.   For over 30 years, AVA has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate direct services to the Vietnamese and other immigrant communities. Because of our reach in the community and our visibly, we also serve as a liaison for many agencies to ensure that vital information reaches our population.  We attribute our success to our ability to anticipate the changing needs in the community and responding appropriately to these needs.  In 2008, AVA was selected by the Harmon Foundation for inclusion in their Catalogue for Philanthropy as “one of the best small charities in the greater Washington Region.”

Who Is AVA

Help refugees and immigrants of all backgrounds secure housing, find jobs, study for U.S citizenship tests, and hosted U.S. Naturalization Ceremonies. We also organized annual cultural and community events such as the Tet Lunar New Year’s Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Annual Scholarship fund.
AVA is dedicated to advancing the Vietnamese American community in Maryland through direct services, advocacy, and education. Today AVA’s mission is to empower low-income families and seniors through direct services and referrals; advocate for social and economic equality by building awareness, capacity, and solidarity within the community; and unify multiple generations of Vietnamese Americans and the larger community.
Formerly known as Maryland Vietnamese Mutual Association (MVMA), founded in 1979, was incorporated in 1982 as a tax-exempt nonprofit organization to address the needs of refugees after the Vietnam War. It is the oldest Vietnamese American community based organization in Maryland.
For over 30 years, AVA has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate direct services to the Vietnamese and other immigrant communities.
